Compress Image for a UK visa — 100% in Your Browser

a UK visa often rejects oversized images. zipo.pics shrinks your file to fit while keeping it sharp, and shows the exact size first.

UKVI rejects a visa photo for two opposite reasons: it is too heavy for the portal, or it is so compressed that quality dropped below their minimum. The gov.uk guidance puts the acceptable range at 50KB–6MB — a phone photo almost always lands above the ceiling, while an over-eager compressor lands below the floor. zipo.pics shows the exact output size while you adjust, so you can stop inside the range instead of guessing.

Official UKVI photo requirements (gov.uk)

The UK rules are a range, not a target to beat

UKVI asks for a portrait-orientation jpg or jpeg, at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, at least 50KB and no more than 6MB. That is a window with a floor as well as a ceiling: a file below 50KB is as unacceptable as one above 6MB. There is no prize for the smallest possible file — aim for comfortably inside the range and stop.

Stay above 50KB without losing face detail

Aggressive settings that are fine for a website image will fail here, because UKVI also rejects photos that look over-compressed. Compare the compressed result against the original at full size and stop as soon as facial features and edges still look clean. Because compression runs locally, your photo is never uploaded while you decide.

Why this beats a server-side uploader for this form

A visa photo is a biometric document tied to your face. Services that compress on their servers keep a copy while processing it. zipo.pics runs Rust + WebAssembly inside your browser, so no copy of your face exists anywhere else at any point — no account, no upload, no third party to hand a file to.

FAQ

What size should I compress for a UK visa?

Aim for the target in the table below and keep the file under it — zipo.pics shows the exact output size before you download.

Will it stay sharp?

zipo.pics uses near-lossless settings by default; compare original vs compressed and stop when it looks acceptable.

Is it private?

Yes — everything runs locally in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. Every conversion runs inside your browser, on your own device, using Rust compiled to WebAssembly. The image bytes are never sent to zipo.pics or to any third party — which is also why the page keeps working offline after it has loaded once.

Is zipo.pics free? Is there a limit on how many images I can compress?

Standard compression is free and unlimited: no account, no image-count cap. Credits are only needed for optional extras such as AI enhancement, noise removal, watermark removal and HD export.

Which image formats can it compress?

PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, AVIF and GIF, and you can convert between them. Choose PNG to shrink a photo while keeping every pixel, WebP or AVIF for the smallest file at a given quality, and JPG when you need universal compatibility.

Will compressing my image reduce its quality?

You decide. Each result is shown next to the original before you download, so you can lower or raise the strength per image. Lossless mode re-encodes the same format without discarding data; stronger settings trade a little fine detail for a much smaller file.
